This serpent sculpture of the Plumed Serpent represents Quetzalcoatl, the serpent god of storm and wind, depicted by the aztecs. His name comes from the Nahuatl Language meaning “feathered serpent”. According to the ancient mexican calender, Quetzalcoatl was born in Year 1 Reed, which happened at the same time Hernán Cortes came to Mexico in 1519. The Aztecs, who had risen to power in the Valley of Mexico by the fifteenth century, interpreted Cortes’ arrival as the return of Quetzalcoatl and welcomed him with gifts.
